Description

The G-1 is one of the most iconic flight jackets ever made — a garment with a direct lineage to World War II naval aviation, refined through decades of military specification and issued to US Navy and Marine Corps aviators from the 1940s onward. This example is the genuine article: a 1964 contract piece, manufactured by Schott Bros. Inc. of New York City, one of the most storied outerwear makers in American history and a primary military contractor throughout the postwar era.

The label tells you everything: Type G-1, MIL-J-78240 (MS), Spec. No. 675, Contract No. 73-64-457. That contract number pins this jacket to 1964 — mid-decade, mid-Cold War, at a moment when US naval aviation was operating at full intensity. Someone wore this jacket on a base, on a flight line, possibly on a carrier. It has the weight and presence of that history.

Construction is fully to military spec. The body is dark seal brown leather — the correct G-1 color — with a voluminous shearling collar that folds down into a wide, warm lapel. Two large snap-flap chest pockets with Schott "S" snap buttons sit low on the chest, functional and substantial. The front closes with a brass zip. Knit cuffs and waistband in dark brown provide the classic bomber silhouette. The interior is lined in gold-toned satin over a tan cotton shell — original, intact, and correct.
