Description
Imagine Sacramento, California in 1904. The bicycle was transforming sport, transportation and life in the West, and the Capital City Wheelmen were right in the middle of it.
This exceptional period photograph captures the Capital City Wheelmen Racing Team, 1903–1904 California State Champions. The team poses in extraordinary fringed racing uniforms around a monumental silver trophy, flanked by early safety bicycles — a remarkable snapshot of pioneer-era California cycling and early West Coast sports culture.
Archival research confirms the team, date and championship status, adding another layer of significance to an already extraordinary image.
The photograph remains as we found it in its substantial Victorian-era wood frame with aged gilt inner liner. Rich sepia tones, dark wood and more than a century of natural patina give it tremendous presence.
At 25.25 inches wide, it is large enough to hold a wall beautifully — equally compelling as California historical photography, early cycling memorabilia, sporting art, or simply a remarkable original object.
