 Igorcreme 13/40 by J.J. L'Heureux, Venice California 1998

The J. J. L’Heureux’ Etichette Series features a vast collection of collages, incorporating traditional Italian fruit and cheese labels, known as etichette. L’Heureux discovered these labels on her travels in Italy, noting the variety and quality that have been gradually replaced by modern, plastic designs. The first etichette collage was created as a gift for a host, but their enthusiasm and positive feedback inspired her to continue making pieces with the hundreds of labels she had collected. To adhere the labels to the under-painted surfaces, L’Heureux utilized a unique knot stitch that she has been using since 1970. This technique was originally used in her "Woman's Work" series of paintings, influenced by the prominent cubist paintings and collages of Picasso and Braque. L’Heureux was first introduced to their work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York during her time as a young artist living in the city.
