Description
Made during the rapid rise of the Grand Army of the Republic, this remarkable c.1880s game board brings together Civil War veterans history, American folk art and Victorian craftsmanship in one unusually graphic object.
The GAR was the great postwar fraternity of Union veterans, founded in 1866 and growing rapidly through the late 19th century. This board carries that history directly into its design: GAR monograms and crossed Union flags occupy the corners, surrounding a classic 8 × 8 chess and checkers playing field framed by deep green, burgundy, cream and metallic-toned geometric decoration.
Designed for traditional games including chess, checkers and draughts, the board is executed in reverse-painted glass— the decoration applied to the back of the glass and viewed through the front, a technique prized for its crisp surface and luminous depth.
Its substantial quarter-sawn oak frame, with pronounced ray-fleck grain and warm aged surface, gives the piece even more architectural presence. The combination of military iconography, bold geometry, color and old oak makes it equally compelling as an antique chessboard or checkerboard, Civil War veterans memorabilia, American folk art, or decorative wall art.
It can be displayed flat as a functional chess and checkers game board or hung as a striking graphic object in a library, den, lodge, game room or collected interior.
