Seven substantial pieces of Mexico, swinging from one seriously substantial length of sterling. A fantastic c.1950s Castelan charm bracelet — weighty, beautifully made and loaded with the kind of wit, movement and character that made mid-century Mexican silver so collectible.

Description

This one has presence.

Made in Mexico by Castelan, this c.1950s sterling silver charm bracelet combines a wonderfully heavy curb-link chain with seven dimensional charms celebrating traditional Mexican imagery and everyday life.

There’s an intricately worked Aztec calendar medallion, sombrero, huarache sandal, floral “MEXICO” medallion, water vessel and other oversize, sculptural souvenir charms — each one with its own detail, movement and personality. Together they read less like a conventional charm bracelet and more like a miniature collection of Mexican folk art you get to wear.

The substantial sterling chain closes with an integrated box clasp bearing the Castelan maker’s mark along with 0925 MEX and STERLING. Decades of natural oxidation have settled beautifully into the recessed decoration, giving the silver the depth and patina we want in a vintage piece like this.

A great piece of mid-century Mexican silver — graphic, tactile, a little eccentric and impossible to ignore on the wrist.

Care

Vintage sterling silver should be handled gently. We recommend leaving the naturally developed patina intact. If cleaning is desired, use only a soft silver-polishing cloth and avoid chemical dips, abrasives or aggressive polishing, particularly around the detailed charms and recessed decoration.
