Job Description:

We are seeking one outstanding retail leader to step into our Retail General Manager position. This candidate should be a strong salesperson who is highly organized, operationally-minded and dedicated to building and nurturing an all-star sales team through feedback, guidance, leadership and one-on-one training. This opportunity is an ideal fit for a candidate who has experience working in retail management and is looking for a new challenge where their role and their contributions will be essential to the growth of the company.

The Retail General Manager will work directly in collaboration with Donna & Wayne Gunther, the business owners and founders of Surfing Cowboys. The Retail General Manager will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the store to ensure all store operations are being executed, the sales team is being effectively managed and all business needs of our Malibu location are being met. The Retail General Manager will also be responsible for creating an atmosphere that promotes a positive work environment, while increasing sales and profits.

As Surfing Cowboys continues to expand operations, we are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible candidate that is interested in putting down roots and growing with us as we start an exciting next chapter in the Surfing Cowboys story.

The ideal candidate will have experience in retail management, strong leadership qualities, and excellent interpersonal skills. This position requires a high level of attention to detail and ability to adapt to our brand culture.

Responsibilities include:

  • Management and coordination of all activities of daily operations, including but not limited to: planning, forecasting, time management, inventory management, staffing and procurement.
  • Sales leadership by playing an active role on the sales floor through customer engagement, ensuring quality customer service is provided and shop goals are met;
  • Coaching/counseling sessions with associates to review performance and provide goals, as well as constructive, timely feedback;
  • Inventory management, product entry, orders, transfers, check ins, processing, storage management, presentation and display.
  • Increasing positive customer experiences that build loyalty and deliver measurable results.
  • Creation of accurate monthly schedules by analyzing peak hours to ensure adequate floor coverage and timely submission of payroll records for all employees;
  • Compliance with all Loss Prevention quarterly self-audits, monthly cycle counts, incident reporting and monthly inventory reconciliations to ensure annual inventory shrinkage is below company target and re-orders are placed in a timely manner;
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed at all times.
  • Ensure that the company is run in accordance with company standards, policies and government regulations.
  • Work with owners and other managers to ensure smooth running of the business.


  • 5+ years retail sales, leadership experience a plus
  • 5+ years operations and logistics experience preferred
  • Experience selling both vintage and new merchandise
  • Flexible leader that is willing to adapt to our brand culture
  • Excellent written communication and computer skills

  • Self-starter who is extremely detail-oriented and able to multitask
  • Adaptable to the ever-changing needs of the business
  • Highly proficient with technology & computers.
  • Experience with Shopify POS, Shopify E-Commerce and G-Suite preferred, Lightspeed POS experience a plus
  • Foreign language skills a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Must have Management experience in a retail or related service industry.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to work a flexible retail schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
