Description

Long before its ties to America, Hawaii was a protectorate of the British. The Sandwich Isles as they were known were the last port before the long journey across the Pacific to the Orient. British ships had been visiting for many years when King Kamehameha flew a British ensign given to him as a token of friendship with King George 111. In later years and with the change in Sea Power, the King judiciously would rotate the Union Jack for the Stars and Stripes depending on whose ships were in port. In an urge to placate all, the Hawaiian flag was created from the flags of the two major powers. The eight stripes are said to represent the eight Hawaiian Islands.

This vintage 1960s flag has a wonderful, vibrant essence, with rich color, moderate wear, fade and staining and it displays beautifully. The 3 foot x 5 foot  size allows it to be impressive without being imposing.
