Don Hansen started his career shaping surfboards in California while working for the legendary Jack O'Neill. In 1961 he moved to the North Shore of Hawaii in 1961 where he started shaping and selling his own Hansen Surfboards from a small shack. His presence rose in the Surf scene when he finished 2nd place in the Makaha Surfing World Championships, was pictured on the cover of Surfing Magazine and was featured in the surf movie, "North Swell," produced by Grant Rohloff. Upon his return to Southern California in 1962 he opened Hansen Surfboards, soon to become one of the largest producers and suppliers of surfboards in the world.
