Hawaiian wall decoration plaque, circa 1890s-1920s featuring the Royal Crest of Hawaii. Made of wood and exceptionally hand-painted with gold leaf and brilliant accent colors onto a black background with deep red trim. The words of King Kamehameha and the Hawaii state motto UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO (the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness) handwritten into the design. This is one of the most beautiful pieces of true Hawaiiana we have ever owned. The hand painting and patina are consistent with its age and use. The gold leaf is vibrant and shows much better in person than in photos. The painting and hand written lettering are clear, precise in execution and obviously professionally done. We have no idea how this Hawaiian decoration got to the mainland but we do know that for the past 20 years its caretaker has been a prominent California collector of Hawaiiana. It has been suggested to us that this Royal Crest plaque originally hung in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a detail we have not yet been able to verify. This is a museum quality piece that would grace any Hawaiian collection. Truly one of a kind. Numerous areas of paint loss, scratches and nicks attest to both the age and use of this 1890s-1920s Hawaiian plaque; we have chosen to offer it in its original condition and preserve it's vintage character. Measures: 30" diameter x 2" deep.
