Greta Magnusson Grossman (1906-1999) was a pioneering Swedish-American architect and designer. She began her education and early career as one of a handful of female designers who defined Swedish Modernism. After establishing herself as an award winning designer of rank in Stockholm, Magnusson Grossman married the jazz bandleader Billy Grossman. In 1940 she emigrated to join him in Los Angeles and set up shop in Beverly Hills with the tag line "Swedish modern furniture, rugs, lamps and other home furnishings."
Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen were among her celebrity clients and she was hired to design for many California based furniture and furnishing companies. Magnusson Grossman's architecture and design merged with the design energy of "California Modernist Style" that was coming into its own.
A recent exhibition at the Pasadena Museum of California Art highlighted Magnusson's influential role in California Design and her rare accomplishments as a female industrial designer and architect of the period. We are thrilled to offer for sale this wood Buffet Cabinet designed by Greta Magnusson Grossman during her time in California.
