Duke Kahanamoku, Vintage Surfing Postcard, Circa 1910
What we have to say:
USA
circa 1910's
Photo postcard of Olympic Champion and "Father of Modern Day Surfing" Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohala Kahanamoku or "Duke".This postcard is very rare, especially in this hand-tinted version. The hand tinted process in itself is fascinating. Back in the early 1900s photos would be taken on Black and White film and printed on postcard formatted sensitive paper. Then the postcards were shipped to Japan where artists would hand tint them. The finished product was then shipped back to Hawaii to be sold in Tourist Kiosks at Hotels such as the Moana and Royal Hawaiian.
In this image the twenty year old Duke is wearing a wool swimsuit, probably a "Moana Hotel" version with logo retouched-out (We have an original Moana swimsuit for sale). Duke is posing by his solid wood surfboard. Each of the Waikiki Beach Boys had their own personal board with their names carved into them.
The back of this card has the Royal Hawaiian Crest and a profile of a very young Duke.
