1965 Extremely Rare "Shane Surfboards" Paipo, Sydney, Australia

$1,800.00
Item Number:
5368

Beautiful and rare Shane Surfboards, Paipo or Belly-Board, circa 1965. Manufactured by Shane Steadman from his shop in Eastwood Sydney. This board is bright red with a 1/2" stringer and a clear, vivid logo in a fantastic font. It has a rakish single fin in a contrasting grey-green color. The board is all original with the exception of a leash plug added in the 1980s. There are a few dings, scrapes and darker areas on the deck, however there is nothing that detracts from the overall beauty of this rare board.

This is a single fin belly-board; it is functional and wide yet thin (1.5" thick). A youth or child could and would have used this as a stand up surfboard while an adult would have used this for barreling along the beach break of Bondi or Manly. At 54" tall it would be easy to hop on a bus from an inner suburb and bea at the beach with this beauty in tow, an urban surfers dream!

Shane Steadman started making hi first surfboards at his Mum's house in the Sydney Suburbs in 1963. By 1965 he had opened his shop in Eastwood, Sydney. He went on to become a major force in the Australian Surf Scene. At one time or another he has produced signature models of true heavy-weights such as Terry Fitzgerald and Michael Peterson with outlets all-over Australia carrying his boards. Steadman's "Shane" Surfboards are still sold to this day in one form or another. Oh, and by the way, we probably should mention that he is the inventor of the Ugg sheepskin boots worn around the world!
